Chilean Cuisine

History of Chile

Chilean Food History
In 1541, when the Spanish arrived in Chile they brought with them chestnuts, walnuts, olives, rice, grapes, citrus fruits, sugar, wheat, garlic and spices. In addition to these raw ingredients, they brought sheep, beef, chicken, and rabbits and also introduced cheeses, milk and sausages. It wasn't until 1848 that the German immigrants arrived in Chile and brought with them the rich, sweet pastries and cakes that they are known for. As Arabs and Italians began to settle in Chile, more styles of food and cuisine were introduced. With the Italians came flavored ice. With the Arabs came herbs and spices as well as the combination of flavors both sweet and salty. The British introduced tea to Chili in the late 1800's.
