History of Greece

Greek Food History
The cooking traditions of Greece go back thousands of years. Today, the Greeks eat some of the very same meals that their ancestors enjoyed in the ancient times.
Greek foods have been influenced by cultures from both the East and the West. During the ancient times, Persians brought foods from the Middle East. These foods were rice, yogurt and sweets that were made from sesame seeds and nuts.
Romans introduced typical Italian foods such as sauces and pastas. Influences from the Arabs have also left a mark on the foods of Southern Greece with spices like cinnamon, cumin and cloves serving as the main seasonings of many dishes.

About Greek Food

Traditional Food in Greece
Some of the most common ingredients in Greek food are fresh vegetables and fruits. Greece depends on seafood and fish as well. Meat is not as common, but is often used in vegetable dishes.
It is traditional for the Greeks to eat a large meal only late at night. A usual breakfast might include cheese, bread, coffee and fresh fruit. The largest daily meal is often eaten around 1 or 2 in the afternoon. Late afternoons allow many Greeks to enjoy a light snack, known as mezethes. A snack of this kind might include fresh vegetables, cheese, soup, olives or bread. Mezethes are often served as appetizers when a large meal starts. The evening meal is sometimes enjoyed as late as 10:00 pm.
